If you don't know much about butterflies, you definitely need a field guide. This book here was the first one that I ever bought after visiting the butterfly conservatory in Niagara Falls. I read it fron to back and learned a lot as a beginner. I used it as a reference when I went out butterfly watching; however, the reference pictures of butterflies are drawn, which in my opinion are not as easy to use to identify butterflies. I prefer to use a field guide that uses close-up photographs to identify different species. Overall though, it is a very inexpensive and comprehensive guide to get started with.

It has highly detailed information about each butterfly from their early egg stages to their behaviour as an adult butterfly. They have excellent pictures throughout the field guide, but they also use drawings for the identification section.

This butterfly guide is excellent. It has everything the amateur butterfly enthusiaist needs. It has a great section on butterfly gardening, it has a section on common butterflies of North America, it has chapters describing those common groups of butterflies, and just general high interest information about butterflies.
